Aunt Bill's Brown Candy

Ingredients
6 cups sugar
1 pint milk
1/2 cup butter
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
2 lbs. nuts

Directions
Put 2 cups of sugar into a pan over very low heat. Stir often with a wooden spoon for about 30 minutes until the sugar turns light brown. Simultaneously mix 4 cups sugar with milk over low heat in another pan. When the sugar is melted, pour into the mixture in a fine stream, stirring constantly.

Cook to hard ball stage, turn off the heat then add the baking soda and stir vigorously as it foams. Add the butter and stir until it has melted. Cool the mixture for 20 minutes. Add vanilla and beat until the mixture turns thick, heavy and dull. Add the nuts and mix. Turn into pans, cool slightly and cut.
