Golden Fudge

Ingredients
3 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
3 tbsp. butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup water
2 tsp. vanilla
candied cherries (red and green)

Directions
Combine the sugar, corn syrup, butter or margarine, salt, evaporated milk and water in a medium sized heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly, to boiling. Cook rapidly, stirring several times, until the temperature reaches 238 on a candy thermometer. A teaspoonful of syrup will form a soft ball when dropped in cold water. Remove from heat and add the vanilla, but do not stir.

Cool the mixture in the pan to 110 degrees or until lukewarm. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and loses its gloss. Spread in a buttered 8x8x2 inch square pan. Allow to stand for 2 to 3 minutes or until set. Cut into squares. Decorate each piece with slivered cherries. Let stand until firm.
