Holiday Plum Pudding

Ingredients
1 cup milk
1 egg
3 cups coarse soft bread crumbs
1/2 cup soft shortening
1/2 cup molasses
1 cup sifted all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 cup seeded raisins
1/2 cup finely chopped candied fruit

Directions
Beat together the milk and egg. Pour the mixture over the bread crumbs. Blend in the shortening and molasses. Sift together the dry ingredients. Stir into the bread crumb mixture. Add the raisins and candied fruit. Pour into a well greased 1 quart mold. Cover loosely with aluminum foil.

Place on oven rack in a large saucepan or in a steamer with 2 cups water in the bottom. Gently steam for 2 hours at 212 to 225 degrees F. Drain off remaining water. Remove foil, turn heat up to 375 degrees F. for 5 minutes to dry the top of the pudding.
