Caramel Dumplings

1/2 cup sugar
1-1/2 cup sifted cake flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup milk
2-1/2 tsp. vanilla

Sift together sugar, flour and baking powder. Cut in butter with blender or fork. Add milk and vanilla and stir only until mixed. Drop by spoonfuls into boiling syrup. Cover and cook over low heat for 12 minutes. Serve hot.

Caramel Syrup

1 cup sugar
2 cups boiling water
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter

Caramelize 1/2 cup sugar in a heavy skillet over low heat by melting and browning to a light golden shade. Add remaining sugar, salt and butter, then bring to a boil.
