Crunchy Date Custard

2 slices bread
2/3 cup dates, diced
3 eggs
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
2-1/2 cups milk, scalded
1/3 cup graham cracker crumbs
3 tbsp. brown sugar
2 tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
sour cream

Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes and toast lightly on all sides. Place in a 1 quart baking dish. Sprinkle the dates over the bread cubes.

Beat eggs lightly, then stir in sugar, salt, vanilla and milk. Pour egg mixture over dates.

Place baking dish in a pan of hot water and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Combine graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar and butter. Sprinkle over pudding and bake for 10 minutes longer. Serve warm with sour cream. Serves 6.
