Golden Fudge

Ingredients
3 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
3 tbsp. butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup water
2 tsp. vanilla
candied cherries (red and green)

Directions
Combine sugar, corn syrup, butter or margarine, salt, evaporated milk and water in a medium sized heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly, to boiling. Cook rapidly, stirring several times, to 238 on a candy thermometer. A teaspoonful of syrup will form a soft ball when dropped in cold water. Remove from heat and add vanilla, but do not stir.

Cool mixture in pan to 110 degrees or until lukewarm. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the mixture thickens and loses its gloss. Spread in a buttered 8x8x2 inch square pan. Allow to stand for 2 to 3 minutes or until set. Cut into squares. Decorate each piece with slivered cherries. Let stand until firm.
